Why is it healthy to eat strawberries?

News in 2026 at the Augusta Strawberries! farm

News in 2026 at the Augusta Strawberries! farm

  • For the first time, we will grow and sell CLERY, an early strawberry variety that can be grown both in the greenhouse and in the field. A variety developed in Italy with large, shiny and sweet berries. The variety is distinguished by its early ripening time, ensuring a rich harvest. It is highly resistant to leaf and root diseases.
  • From next year we will grow ELAN, which produces all summer and is an ornamental and excellent remontant variety suitable for both professional cultivation and home gardens. The plant produces bushy and vigorous lilacs, while producing long, drooping tendrils with flowers and berries. The berries are medium to large, bright red, juicy and sweet, with a strong wild strawberry aroma.
  • The new variety FPS-17-6597-3 is characterised by high yields, large berries with a strong sheen and light colour. The berries are firm and tasty.

“Guntars Dzērve, agronomist at Augusta Strawberries, has just returned from a training course in the Netherlands, where he learnt the various tricks of strawberry growing. Find out about possible new strawberry varieties and how to grow them in greenhouses and in the field. G. Dzērve: “One of the trends is that several breeding stations are working on growing strawberry plants from seed, which will be of very high quality and the seedlings will be healthier and more resistant to diseases.” As a result, we will have to do less physical work. For hobby growers, large farms and households alike, it is a topical issue to grow strawberries in greenhouses and tunnels, as well as on balconies or terraces.

It is increasingly difficult to grow strawberries in the field because we cannot predict or influence the weather. If you are planning to plant your first strawberry plants, PARLANDO is a very good strawberry variety to start with, it is rewarding, reliable and suitable for beginners. It is a strawberry variety with low disease incidence, is extremely hardy and can be grown in small greenhouses, in growing bags and even together with tomatoes and cucumbers. For next year, we also offer frigo strawberry planting kits and frigo strawberry plants already planted in a bag. Once the strawberries have ripened, they will be planted in a bed where they will produce for another two years.

2027. in 2010, the breeding stations will work on developing new varieties so that the strawberry plants are less affected by root rot and powdery mildew. Strawberries are becoming increasingly difficult to grow in a bed, so new varieties need to be more and more adapted to growing in covered areas.

Which strawberry plant will yield the most strawberries?

Why it’s important to know what this combination of A, A+, A++, WB or TRAY means,

when choosing frigo strawberry plants for next season?

Frigo strawberry plants are graded according to the diameter of the root collar, which determines the quality of the plants – the larger the diameter, the more florets and the higher the potential yield.

-CategoryB seedlings are the least developed and can produce one poorly developed inflorescence.

A (10-12 mm) – few berries, more serious yield only the following year.

A+ (12-15 mm) – stronger seedling with higher yield.

A++ (15-18 mm) – a vigorous seedling which can produce up to 300 g of berries in the first year.

WB (19-22 mm) – a very vigorous seedling with a potential of up to 500 g of berries.

TRAY – a container plant with very high yields, starting from 700 g berries per plant.

Teach children responsibility when growing strawberries

How to teach your child responsibility and a sense of duty? You can start by caring for your own strawberries!

“Guntars Dzērve, agronomist at Augusta Strawberries: “The advantage of soil bags is that they can be placed in any convenient location. Even on the balcony! This is a very simple and quick way to grow strawberries, and it won’t take much time or work. Using the bag efficiently, you can plant 6-8 frigo plants. In just 2 months, your child will be eating strawberries in his mouth!”

Place the strawberry bag in the most convenient place for you – garden, greenhouse or balcony; cut the required number of holes in the bag (depending on the number of strawberries); plant the frigo strawberry plants in them and, in just 2 months, enjoy the first pink berries with your child!

While the strawberries grow, the child will develop:

  • caring, a sense of responsibility for the plant (because it needs to be watered);
  • knowledge of biology (the growth cycle of the strawberry);
  • patience (the harvest must wait 2 months)
  • self-confidence (‘I can do it myself’)
  • understanding that you have to work to get the ‘reward’ or delicious strawberries

Most importantly, this will be a valuable and exciting time for you and your child. And it will probably be another good childhood memory for your child.
